OLM School Celebrates Reading Week
Highlights Include Visits from RI Authors and Storytellers Jill Austin and Keith Munslow
The week before April vacation at OLM was chock full of activities and programs that kept students engaged, enthused, and above all, reading, thanks to the planning, dedication and creativity of OLM School Librarian Cheryl Maynard.
The OLM “Be Inspired” Reading Week began on Monday, April 13 with the annual favorite
“Dress as a Vocab Word” Day. Winners for creativity and sophistication were selected from each grade level. On Tuesday, students paired up with reading buddies from other grades for a reading workshop in the library, which featured a starry sky and flashlights to read by. It is always a memorable time for all of the students; those in the lower grades look up to their new friends in the upper grades, while also affording the older students mentoring opportunities. On Wednesday, OLM welcomed RI Author and Storyteller Jill Austin to share her RI Loves book with our Pre-K3 and PreK4 students. On Thursday, RI Storyteller and Songwriter Keith Munslow entertained students in Grades K-5 with engaging stories and silly songs. Munslow returned on Friday for a Storytelling Workshop with our Middle Schoolers who thoroughly enjoyed his Comedic Improv presentation. Friday’s Chalk the Block was also a big hit with students of all ages decorating the school parking lot with artwork from favorite books..
Ongoing activities throughout the week included D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time each day with different themes that ranged from reading outside day and reading with buddies “under the stars” in the library to shared snack time with Student Council and reading with a favorite stuffed animal. Students in all grades look forward to the opportunity to be paired with their buddies in different grade levels throughout the week.
