OLM School Holds Science Fair; Top Six Advance to State Fair
As part of their outstanding science curriculum, all eighth grade students at Our Lady of Mercy school participate in the annual OLM School Science Fair. Last week, the students presented their impressive projects to faculty and staff and winners were selected, with the top six advancing to the Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair being held March 15-16 at CCRI in Warwick.
Students began working on their projects in September when they developed a hypothesis from a question about a topic in which they had a special interest. They were able to integrate their personal interests in things like music, sports, baking, health and a variety of pertinent topics with standard scientific theories and practices. Over the last few months, they designed an investigation and tested their hypotheses. The project concluded with the school science fair on January 23rd. Faculty and administrators served as judges, with proud parents attending later in the evening.
According to Dr. Deborah Husak, MD, Middle School Science Teacher at OLM, “A successful science fair project involves creativity, research, planning, analysis and communication. I am very proud of the professionalism and hard work of every student in our eighth grade.”
Winners and their topics included:
First Place: Ben Magiera (Warwick, RI ) – Is Organic Food Worth the Price?
Second Place: Lola Berube (North Kingstown, RI) – Do Dogs Have a Favorite Color?
Third Place: Sienna Giardino (East Greenwich, RI)- Does the Heart have a Favorite Song?
Honorable Mention: Ryan D’Orsi (Greene, RI)– Does Flex Make You Better then the Rest?
Honorable Mention: Annabel Morgan (North Kingstown, RI)- A Colorful Question: How Does Color Affect Memory?
Honorable Mention: Owen Sowa (East Greenwich, RI)- The Lace Race
