OLM Middle School Soccer Team Captures CAL Title
Junior Team Finishes at State Runners-Up
Our Lady of Mercy School’s co-ed soccer teams both advanced to the CAL (Catholic Athletic League) State Championships, which were held on a very hot Thursday afternoon at LaSalle Academy on June 11, with the Middle School squad taking home the State Title.
The Middle School Team capped off a perfect 10-0 season with a dominant win over a very talented St. Joseph Gold team. OLM Seventh Grader Carter Cathers, the Player of the Match, scored two goals, including the game winner. A goal by Eighth Grader Adam Hayes midway through the second half pushed the Jaguars lead to 3-0. Seventh Grader Lucca Iafrati kept the St. Joseph defense under pressure throughout the contest. The OLM defense, led by Eighth Grader Noah Vetovis and Seventh Grader Emma Killinger, limited the Eagles offense to just one goal. Seventh Grader Caden Schweizer was once again outstanding in goal for OLM.
The Grammar team had advanced to the championship game with a semifinal win over St. Luke, 3-0.
The OLM Junior soccer team finished their season as runners up to St. Philip School in the other Championship match at LaSalle Academy. The Jaguars came up just short at the final whistle, losing 3-2 in a very exciting game. Fifth grader Bella Simas made 9 saves in goal for the Jaguars, including a breakaway stop in the second half. OLM goals were scored by Fifth Graders Jack Gilkey and Benjamin Feeney, the Player of the Match. The team had defeated Fr. John V. Doyle in a thrilling penalty shootout in the CAL semifinal match to advance to the title game.
