Leadership Skills- The OLM Advantage

Student Council

Another tremendous extracurricular opportunity at OLM is the Student Council, which is open to students in grades 4-8.  With parent and teacher approval, students are given the opportunity to run for a specific position or office, give speeches supporting their cause, and experience a true election.  Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to serve as “homeroom reps”.  While the offices of Secretary and Treasurer are open to 7th and 8th graders, only 8th graders may serve as President and Vice President.  With the principal and one teacher moderator, the Student Council holds weekly meetings to plan events that encompass a number of social and service elements.  From the annual, beloved “Fall Festival”, that includes the 8th graders setting up a “haunted house” to a variety of service-oriented collections of food and clothing for the less fortunate, Student Council members enjoy the opportunity to exhibit skills in leadership, communication, teamwork and even good sportsmanship when an election is won or lost!   Many OLM students who have participated in Student Council while at OLM have gone on to assume leadership roles in High School and beyond.
